Château de Beaucastel Grenache is king of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, but Beaucastel is one of two estates where Mourvèdre dominates—resulting in one of the longest-lived and most noble wines of the region.

Domaine de Beaurenard One of the first domaines to estate-bottle their wines, Beaurenard produces modern wines of great color, ripeness, richness and intensity.

Les Cailloux Proprietor André Brunel consistently hits the high notes in even the most challenging vintages. His luxury offering, Cuvée Centenaire, is a wine to die for!

Domaine de la Charbonnière This up-and-coming estate makes multiple cuvées of traditionally styled wines, all based on Grenache, but with more Syrah and Mourvèdre than many estates utilize.

Domaine Charvin Charvin is the poor man's Château Rayas and may be the only wine that comes close in character to its ethereal elegance and complexity. Its delicacy and notes of sweet cherries and raspberries have more in common with Burgundy's greatest grand crus than most Châteauneufs.

Clos du Mont-Olivet Sabon is one of the most famous family names in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and the Sabons produce extraordinary, uncompromisingly rustic, rich wines at this traditional estate.

Clos des Papes This benchmark property has an impeccable record over the past two decades, producing Châteauneuf-du-Pape at its most elegant and Burgundian.

Clos Saint Jean Brilliant oenologist Philippe Cambie has resurrected this estate, now one of the most promising in the appellation. Prices have not yet caught up with quality.

Domaine Grand Veneur This progressive estate has been making Châteauneuf-du-Pape since 1826, but did not become one of the best until the late 1990s. These are modern-style wines of great purity and richness.

Domaine de la Janasse A classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape story: Young Christophe Sabon took over this estate 15 years ago and began turning out profound wines from the estate's ancient vineyards.

Domaine de Marcoux Sisters Sophie and Catherine Armenier are producing some of the most majestic and complex wines of the region, and their bottlings are among my favorite wines in the world.

Domaine de la Mordorée It is unlikely anyone could find a better-run estate than this one. Proprietor Christophe Delorme fashions a serious, long-lived Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Château la Nerthe One of the oldest (16th century) and largest estates of Châteauneuf-du-Pape; its luxury offering, Cuvée des Cadettes, is one of the finest wines on planet Earth.

Domaine du Pegau This estate, along with Henri Bonneau, is the epicenter of traditional Châteauneuf-du-Papes. Its luxury cuvée, declared in the finest vintages, is Cuvée da Capo, a wine of exhilarating richness, concentration and complexity.

Château Rayas If the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti's Romanée-Conti vineyard was in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, it would be at Rayas. This can be a glorious as well as absurdly expensive wine, but when it is great, it is one of the world's most monumental wines.

Domaine Pierre Usseglio Brothers Jean-Pierre and Thierry Usseglio have turned a pleasant but uninspired estate into one of the great domaines of the region. Their wines are among the finest in the world.

Domaine Roger Sabon The intellectual Jean-Jacques Sabon produces four cuvées of Châteauneuf, each one of increasing concentration, intensity and grandeur.

Domaine de la Vieille Julienne This modest estate has skyrocketed to the top thanks to Jean-Paul Daumen, who produces magnificently scented, extremely pure wines.

Domaine Vieux Donjon This is a traditional estate producing classic Châteauneuf-du-Papes meant for long aging.

Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe This famous estate possesses some of the finest terroirs of the appellation, producing classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape that handsomely repays aging.

I only have one question : is the gourou disapointed with Henri Bonneau ? A little winemaker... so modern !

He can't miss him, what's a shame !

cordialement,
Marc
