Tout d'abord, il ne s'agit pas d'une liste exhaustive, mais plutôt d'une aide à la recherche d'un whisky qui vous permet d'avoir une idée des produits disponibles sur le marché. La liste est divisée en trois sections.

Dans la première de ces sections (de gauche à droite), vous trouverez le nom de la distillerie ou parfois celui du whisky qui y est produit (ce qui peut expliquer que certaines distilleries ont plusieurs noms). Dans la deuxième section est indiquée la région de provenance à laquelle se rattache la distillerie. La dénomination des régions reprend celle communément acceptée dans la plupart des ouvrages spécialisés, en ajoutant cependant pour la région « Highlands » une situation géographique plus précise. Enfin, dans la troisième section, on trouvera l'indication des millésimes produits par chaque distillerie. Une petite explication s'impose à ce sujet :

· Les chiffres (8, 10, 12, ...) signalent que la distillerie produit des whiskies de huit, dix, douze ans d'âge ;
· La lettre M signale que la distillerie produit des whiskies « millésimés », c'est-à-dire qu'elle indique sur l'étiquette non pas le nombre d'années passé en fûts, mais l'année à laquelle le whisky a été distillé, parfois également l'année d'embouteillage (ce qui permet alors de calculer l'âge du whisky) ;
· Les lettres NAS signifient « no age statement », c'est-à-dire que la distillerie n'indique pas volontairement l'âge du whisky, ce qui lui permet de produire des malts d'âges différents sous la même appellation suivant les années ;
· La lettre I signale que des embouteilleurs indépendants mettent sur le marché des versions inofficielles (non reconnues par la distillerie) d'un whisky ;
· Les lettres CS signifient qu'un whisky officiel de la distillerie est vendu en « cask strength ».
